Breath II - for string trio (2021/22)

Since 2020, I have developed a composition series titled Breath, which explores the interplay between noise and pitch through subtle nuances and delicate gestures. Each piece employs distinct instrumentation, offering multiple musical and conceptual perspectives on the theme of “breath.”

Breath II  centers on an exploration of delicate, airy sound worlds shaped through the integration and interaction of multiple sonic sources. In this work, timbre functions as both a complement to pitch and a vehicle for expressive allusion. The material draws from natural harmonics; muted and noise-based sounds (such as air-noise or bowing on the side of the instrument); fluid gestural motion derived from glissandi—including rapid col legno glissandi—and a range of bow techniques such as circular bowing, jeté, and subtle gradations of bow pressure to continuously modulate tone quality. The resulting soundscape blends pitch, noise-oriented elements, and mobile gestures into a flexible, evolving texture.

The three instruments merge into a hybrid ensemble instrument, in which each contributes equally to the sonic fabric while retaining its own identity through individualized gestural characteristics. Each voice fulfills a distinct timbral role within stratified layers, fitting together like pieces of a sonic puzzle to form a unified yet delicately articulated musical whole.
