Breath II is a composition for a string trio consisting of violin, viola, and cello. This piece is dedicated to the ensemble HANATSU Miroir, which premiered it on March 26, 2022, at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center in Austin, Texas. It was later recorded by the Talea Ensemble in January 2024 in New York City. The composition delves into the diverse sound capabilities of string instruments, merging traditional and contemporary playing techniques.
My approach to sound design focuses on the harmonious interplay of delicate, airy sounds derived from various sources. These include natural harmonics, multiple muting techniques that produce air-like noises, and innovative gestural expressions such as glissandi executed in distinct styles including col legno with rapid glissando. The piece also incorporates an array of bowing techniques like circular bowing, jeté, and the nuanced transition from light to intense bow pressure, allowing for a dynamic modulation of sound textures. Breath II envisions the trio as a unified hybrid instrument, where each part contributes both individually through distinct gestural elements and collectively, ensuring a rich, layered textural interplay that resembles a sonic jigsaw puzzle.
