GELI LI
COMPOSER
Cross-Cultural Mixed Ensemble
I am deeply engaged in listening to the cultural memories carried by Eastern traditional instruments and in transforming their identities through expanded timbral vocabularies. My compositional practice is timbre-oriented, reimagining the sonic traditions of instruments such as the Chinese sheng, Japanese shō, and Korean gayageum by reshaping them into newly articulated contemporary languages in integrated dialogue with Western instruments. By reimagining conventional perceptions of traditional instruments and reconfiguring the possibilities of intercultural instrumentation, I seek to create a synthesis rooted in a deep understanding of musical dignity and sustained artistic pursuit. This work has expanded the expressive capacities of these instruments while fostering intercultural dialogue through music. I view my compositional practice as a reflection of ongoing conversations between tradition and innovation, sonic memory and future exploration, and cultural influences and personal identity shaping the creative process.
