Only the Wind Knows - for gayageum, violin, double bass, and percussion (2025)
Only the Wind Knows was composed for the AsianArt Ensemble and premiered on August 22, 2025, in Berlin, Germany. The piece is written for a unique ensemble that brings together instruments from distinct musical traditions—most notably, the Korean gayageum and a variety of European instruments.
In this work, I imagine a sound world where each instrument retains its independence and dignity as a sonic entity, yet engages in dialogue with the others. Rather than blending into a single voice, the instruments interact, respond, and resonate—forming a vivid and fluid sound-map. Within this landscape, gestures, silences, and freely shaped melodic fragments unfold naturally, without force, as if carried by the wind.
How can we chase the wind? How can we remain the wind?
These questions lingered as I composed. Through this piece, I aim to render sound as a reflection of life’s beauty—something real yet fragile, delicate yet profound. I imagine a world that is colorful, poetic, airy, and unforgettable. It is love, sensation, scent, light, and every fleeting movement we long to preserve. Yet these things, like the wind, cannot be held. They dance briefly before dissolving, leaving only their echoes in our memory.
