When My Eyes Closed was commissioned by Ensemble United Instruments of Lucilin in 2024. The piece was premiered by Anthony Millet, Naomi Sato, and Olivier Sliepen on June 29th at the Valentiny Foundation in Luxembourg.

While composing this work, I imagined myself in meditation—eyes closed, releasing the noise of the surrounding world. I focused inward, listening closely to the voices in my mind, my heart, and my soul. From that quiet space, I cultivated layers of sound that sometimes mirror one another like shadows, merging into a single voice. At other times, they diverge— each one speaking independently with its own expressive force.

This piece also explores another dimension of sound—one that is innocent and poetic. I was drawn to the delicate vibrations of the reeds, the resonance of silence, and the stillness at the end of the piece, as sound fades into quiet. In that space, with my eyes closed, I listened to my soul. It spoke of beautiful memories—moments once vivid, now distant, blurred, and ethereal. And as I slowly opened my eyes, I imagined light—soft, bright, white—filling the space with hope and the fragile brilliance of life.
