Media report: Talea Ensemble Celebrates 15 Years With Program of Immersive Solo Works

The Embrace of the Wind and the Memories, for cello and fixed media, was composed in 2022 and premiered by Jay Campbell. In this work, the tape’s sound materials originate from another composition of mine for the solo Chinese zheng. The zheng’s original timbre is altered and enriched through sound processing, offering a unique quality and resulting in a modified soundscape that inherently elaborates on the acoustic part.

Inspired by the zheng’s instrumentation and musical features, the cello adopts expressions such as a wide-ranging glissando following a pizzicato, followed by diverse vibratos. This imitation is inspired by the characteristic zheng technique where, after the right hand plucks a string, the left hand applies vibrato to broaden and deepen the note. By employing fixed media, my efforts in sound exploration mirror my aspiration to interlace the complex musical idioms of Eastern and Western traditions, crafting a sonic palette that bridges cultural elements.
